I tell my students every day they are world changers! I want them to see that the average citizen really can change the world!
My third grade students, with their fifth grade reading buddies from Mrs. Emily Reisler’s class, planned and hosted a fundraiser for Kids’ Food Basket, and raised money over the last two weeks in March! They invited classrooms to decorate a brown paper bag to represent that teacher/class and then asked staff, students and parents to vote for their favorite with coins. One cent equaled one vote. They set a goal of $500. They did every step on their own, from writing the proposal letter, coming up with the name “Changing the World with Change,” sharing information with teachers, writing the letter to go home to parents, creating advertising posters, setting up the contest rules, counting the coins and making the results announcement! Mrs. Reisler and I just facilitated. The goal was met within the first two days, and the students ended up raising $925 to donate!
Friday, April 25, Mr. Troy Vos from Kids' Food Basket visited Daisy Brook for a school-wide assembly in the morning. The teachers who produced the winning bags were given certificates,
Emma Bradley, a fourth grader who did her own fundraiser gave Mr. Vos her check for $215 and then students from our Reading Buddy group presented Mr. Vos with a giant check for our donation.
Throughout the rest of the day, Mr. Vos had over 100 students at a time opening packages, and filling bags that would become dinners for students in West Michigan. Each child who participated actually had a hands-on experience helping others! We filled over 4,000 bags! Mr. Vos also challenged the students of Daisy Brook to decorate 3000 brown paper bags by the end of the school year! The students feel they are up to the challenge! They are World Changers!
